Tom DeSimone, Confessions Of A Male Groupie, or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Electric Banana, 16mm on digital, 60min., 1971
'I go to the best parties, smoke the best dope, and suck the biggest cocks.'
Confessions… is the self-described, “hard-core pop musical camp expose'” that follows Larry, a country boy who moves to Los Angeles and shacks up with Sweet Lady Mary, a bodacious den mother with a Venice party pad. When the exciting new band the Electric Banana comes to town the two throw a party to entice them into the kind of bacchanal only available this side of the 1970s. This hysterical and horny psychedelic romp is bursting with rock lore, like Mary, a fictional blend of Mama Cass and Cynthia Plaster Caster, the visual artist known for creating countless plaster replicas of celebrity genitalia.
The film was directed by Tom DeSimone, graduate of the UCLA Film program and an early auteur of gay porn classics (Erotikus, The Idol). DeSimone managed one of the first gay porn theaters in the US, as well as producing dozens of feature films for the gay production studio, Hand in Hand Films. DeSimone also directed the cult features, Hell Night (1981) starring Linda Blair, Reform School Girls (1986) starring Wendy O. Williams, and Chatterbox starring Rip Torn, as well as directing television, including episode of Freddy’s Nightmares and Swamp Thing.
Stars Larry Danser as The Groupie; D C Michaels as Steve; Ruffin Tumble as Jeff; Sky Kinque as Frank (the last 3 make up the group Electric Banana); introducing Myona Phetish as Sweet Lady Mary; The Beautiful People as The Beautiful People and featuring Jennifer Michaels and Dana Reuben, stars of Penelope Spheeris' early short films.
